After severe flooding and a spike in diseases, the city of Mobile was forced to move to its present-day location in 1711. Due to the convenient location and sizable port, Mobile would be taken over by several nations before finally joining the United States after the War of 1812. The city’s port grew to be of even more importance when the Industrial Revolution created cotton shortages, inspiring southern farmers to make and sell more of their products. By 1850, Mobile was only second to New Orleans in cotton exports and was attracting businessmen from around the world.
The city’s growth halted during the American Civil War as the city suffered great casualties. However, the progressive era reignited Mobile’s spark and new industries opened in the city, creating new job opportunities as well. After World War II, Mobile only continued to grow into the beautiful city it is today.
