The area which Daphne inhabits was originally visited by several Native American communities, including the Tensaw, Choctaw and Seminole. This came to be known as a neutral ground for the tribes to meet and discuss important matters amongst the leaders. Over time, the groups began to work together to provide food for their families before beginning the production of pottery and weapons that allowed the groups to trade. In 1540, the first Spanish settlers arrived in Daphne with Hernando de Soto. However, the control of the area was weak and Daphne fell under French control in 1710 as they claimed Mobile Bay.
The area fell under the control of the British and Spanish before eventually becoming a part of the United States in 1814. Daphne was officially named and established on April 9th, 1874, despite having been settled for over 200 years. Since its founding, Daphne has withstood wars, hurricanes and even a late-night raid. The city is truly amazing and has come a long way in a short amount of time.
Daphne is home to a variety of stores and exciting things to do. One of Daphne’s most unique attractions is Gator Alley Boardwalk, which was founded in 2004 by Wes Moore. The alligators that live in this alley were rescued from dangerous environments and moved to the alley, which was designed to be a safe habitat for the alligators. This boardwalk allows visitors to take in fantastic sights and, at Gator Station, you may even get a chance to hold a baby alligator!
